NATOP, FTAN & Lagos State Spotlight Takwa Bay on World Tourism Day 2025

Spotlight Takwa Bay on World Tourism Day 2025

It was a bright and breezy morning on September 27th, 2025, when Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark World Tourism Day (WTD). This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” set the tone for an inspiring celebration hosted by the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) in partnership with the Lagos State Government.

The day began at the Five Cowries Jetty, where stakeholders from across the tourism industry boarded ferries to Takwa Bay — a hidden eco-tourism jewel tucked along the Lagos coastline.

A Day of Culture, Commitment & Celebration

Upon arrival, the tranquil beachfront of Takwa Bay came alive with vibrant music, cultural performances, and an enthusiastic crowd of tourism stakeholders, government officials, community leaders, and guests.

Leading the Lagos State Government’s delegation was Ms. Damilola Ayinde-Marsha, Senior Special Assistant on Tourism to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to positioning Lagos as a global tourism destination.

In her remarks, Alhaja Bolaji Mustapha, President of NATOP, explained that Takwa Bay was deliberately chosen to spotlight lesser-known destinations while preparing them for increased visitor traffic during Lagos’ peak tourism season in December. She encouraged Nigerians to embrace domestic tourism and discover the treasures within their borders.

Adding a regional perspective, Mrs. Yvonne Donkor, President of the Tour Operators Union of Ghana, urged participants to “reimagine tourism and unlock its full potential for the continent’s prosperity.”

Goge Africa’s Voice at WTD 2025

Representing Goge Africa, Co-Founder Amb. Isaac Moses praised NATOP’s leadership for recognizing the importance of exploring and promoting under-visited destinations such as Takwa Bay. Goge Africa’s enduring mission of spotlighting Africa’s hidden gems resonated with the event’s core message.

Other notable attendees included:

Amb. Nneka Isaac-Moses, Co-Founder of Goge Africa

Amb. Ikechi Uko, Founder of Akwaaba African Travel Market

Mohammed Tanko, Trade Relations Manager, West Africa, South African Tourism

FTAN South West Presidet, Mr Gbenga Sunmonu

Tour Brokers International, represented by Mrs. Odion Chigbufue

Tour2Nigeria CEO, Otunba Michael Balogun, ace tour guide Anago Osho, and many others.

Tourism stakeholders, industry leaders, and members of the Takwa Bay community were well represented.

Empowering Communities for Transformation

In line with the sustainable transformation theme, NATOP organized a free masterclass for Takwa Bay locals on the art of grilling — an initiative aimed at upgrading culinary skills, enhancing tourist experiences, and creating new income opportunities for the community.

The event concluded with cultural dances, live music, and a festive atmosphere that united visitors and locals alike, underscoring tourism’s power to drive economic growth, cultural pride, and community development.

Looking Ahead

The success of WTD 2025 at Takwa Bay reaffirms Lagos’ commitment to harnessing tourism as a tool for sustainable development. With collaborative efforts between government, operators, and communities, the state is set on a promising trajectory to unlock its full tourism potential.

Goge Africa celebrates NATOP, Lagos State Government, and all stakeholders for making WTD 2025 a remarkable experience. Together, we continue to shine the spotlight on Africa’s treasures.
