Goge Africa sends warmest congratulations to all the contestants whose entries reflected the theme of our 20th Anniversary Creative Contests.

In accordance with our original modus to adjudge the creativities of all Participants, we have promised to upload and stream, all shortlisted works for online public voting process, across our social media pages. This is to give the teeming online followers of your favorite Travels and Tourism show – Goge Africa, an opportunity to be a part of this noble exercise. Short Description: The Eyo Festival is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria. It is celebrated on Lagos Island, the traditional homeland of Lagosians. The festival, mostly white robed, has become a major tourist attraction, in Lagos State.

Artist Bio: Odinakachi Okoroafor is a Nigerian, born in 1989. He holds a B.A degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). He has participated in numerous art group exhibitions. Notable among them is the Spanish Visual arts competition held in Abuja in 2018, where his artwork was selected as the second runners up.

Short Description: This artwork is a celebration of the African Woman through the prism of an Igbo maiden of Southeastern Nigeria origin. Donning a traditional Igbo hair style, drabbed in a traditional fabric known as Akwete, adorned in Uli body art, and a highly polished African skin and beads; which are of African cultural heritage. The work creatively communicates the diversity and uniqueness of African culture.

Artist Bio: Babalola is an explorer of mixed media art. He started his art career from his primary school and developed his talent in his secondary school when he served as the school cartoonist in the school magazine. He obtained a National Diploma in General Art graduate of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Eruwa (now Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa) emerging Overall Best student of Art and Design Department.  Proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, where he bagged his B.A. and M.A. in Arts. He had participated in many National art competitions such as LIMCAF (Life in my City Art Festival), Sterling Bank Recyclart Competition, Union Bank Centenary Art Challenge and many more. He won the second prize in the National Art Competition organized by Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in 2011 and many other awards. He is presently a full time studio artist.

Short Description: Isese L’Agba is a painting which revolves around three themes predominant amongst Africans – Religion, Culture, and Dress. Through the use of various motifs, the artists’ work symbolically represents the several elements of African societies within the ambits of the aforementioned themes, tracing the historical drift of Africa from traditional religion to later-day Christianity and Islam. Employing Nigeria as a focal point, the diversity of the African continent is further portrayed through the eyes of the largest ethnic constituents in Nigeria, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo.

Artist Bio: Kalu Obinna ThankGod is a Nigerian-born artist, with specialty in painting. A graduate of Nsukka school of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. An enthusiastic and passionate artist who derives joy in realistic painting, not just for aesthetic purposes but also to address the societal issues, air his views through art as a medium for expression. He has participated in several exhibitions including “My Dreams Alive” UNN, “The Manifesto” UNN, “Life in My City” Enugu and so many others.

Short Description: Drawing inspiration from the place of women as purveyors of African life through their wombs, as well being the brain ‘behind’ a man’s success, therefore they deserve to be respected and treated right. This painting through the woman’s facial expression depicts dissatisfaction among our women thus, looking forward and beaconing on our government to help protect our women as well as giving them the love and care they deserve.

Artist Bio: Israel Padonu is a 2017 graduate of Creative Arts from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria. Through mastery of several art medias in drawing and painting, he has unequivocally conveyed his thoughts through art. Open to learning, he looks forward to growing into a more sophisticated artist, advancing the gospel of African beauty. Israel was a recipient of Rotary Club of Altadena, USA entrepreneurship Firts prize award in 2015. He was also awarded by the Creative Arts Students’ Association as the ‘Painter of the year’ in 2017.

Short Description: Drawing inspiration from the ancient past, a kaleidoscopic view of Badagry, its history and culture is presented to all and sundry. Infusing elements of her heritage such as: The Zangbeto Masquerade, The Sato Drum and Fishing as one of the major occupation of the people of Badagry; the artist seeks to evoke an essence of pride in African culture and traditions. West African Adinkra symbols, laced with meanings such as; Bravery and Valour, Independence, Freedom and Emancipation, Beauty and Cleanliness. The goge as an African musical instrument is on the Madagascar part of the African map in this painting, and it’s a deliberate act to celebrate Goge Africa at 20.

Short Description: The artwork is a charcoal pencil on pastel paper work, named beholders eye. It speaks of the beauty in the African culture. The figures are representative of regions I.e. the lip plate culture from Ethiopia, the Idia mask from Nigeria and the Dan mask from Liberia. Artist Bio: Morakinyo Caleb also known as Calebart on Instagram, is a Lagos-born artist. Having practiced art under the tutelage of an art virtuoso, he proceeded to the Institute of management and technology (IMT), Enugu where he obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts. Currently, he is a student of sculpture in the school of ART, IMT Enugu.

Short Description: An aggregation of cultural diversity and technological advancement, specifically the bronze age; the sculpture represents the three major ethnic groupings in Nigeria. On both side of the artwork is a close representation of the Ofo, an Igbo elite insignia of office, engraved with traditional Uli art. On the forehead is the ìfẹ́ head, a representation of the Ooni/òní. A close representation of this symbol could also be found on the crown of the present- day (Ooni/oni) of ìfẹ́, a Yoruba tribe of the South West Nigeria. The scarification on the brow, represents widespread scarification, a form of beautification, notably found amongst the Hausa/Fulani people of Northern Nigeria. The beads on each side of the cheek down to the chin level represents ornaments of Benin kings of Southern Nigeria. The work is seated on a type of hand fan mainly used by Kings and nobles from the South-South Nigeria. The reddish brown colour (bronze) commemorate artist of 15th and 16th century and their impact on bronze sculptures.

Adopting the brand, “I chose science, ARTS chose me”, Mayowa, through his art has taken the position of a social reformer. Short Description: In African cultural clime, women are viewed as reservoirs of peace, beauty and love. As depicted by the serenity of the environment of the image dress, … the cloud, flowers, trees, water… And this road to her heart can only be taken by that person, whose decision is to embark on a one-way trip, without intent of reversing as portrayed by the rail line…Notwithstanding, faults developed by the train, or the slow pace of the journey, the rail only leads to its destination. Interpreting these imageries, only a man who sees the royalty of a woman, commits his loyalty to her, views her as a queen can bring forth perpetual smiles on her face. “HE WHOSE COMMITMENT TO HER KNOWS NO REVERSE.” May we be that man!!!

Artist Bio: Olowu, Ifeoluwa Oluwaseun was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He attended Yaba College of Technology primary and secondary school. Nurtured interest from comics and nature, this interest was cultivated during his childhood and further developed, when he opted to take his Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts. He attended the University of Lagos, where he majored in painting, under the Visual Arts unit. After completing his degree, Ife delved into Painting and acquired skills in Designs and printing. His practice is a combination of drawing, designs and paintings, to create visually appealing works, using the expressionism style. His pencil works are realistic and he aims to achieve photographic representation. Ife has had two major group exhibitions, in the year 2018. He has participated in several art exhibitions across the country.

Short Description: The use of expressive colours and mixed media for this work of Art. Tribal mark plays a very vital role in our culture and heritage. These scarifications’  are specific identification and also used for beautification. We can easily tell a person’s state by his/her Tribal marks.  The Gele also signifies the Owambe of the Yoruba people.

Be happy with whatever you have little or big, one or two, black or white etc. Contentment is the key. Our culture teaches us to be contented with what we have.
