An Emotional Yet Historic Homecoming: 119 Benin Bronzes Return to Nigeria
It was an emotional moment yet one that felt absolutely right for Amb. Moses Isaac and Nneka Moses Isaac, as they witnessed history being made at the official signing ceremony for the return of 119 Benin Bronzes from the Netherlands to Nigeria.
Held at the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos, this marked the largest single repatriation of Nigerian artefacts in history. These priceless treasures including commemorative heads and plaques were looted during the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom and have been held in Dutch museums like the Wereld Museum for over a century.
Minister Hannatu Musawa called the return a restoration of national dignity, saying the artefacts embody the spirit, brilliance, and resilience of the Benin people. It’s more than bronze it’s our history, finally coming home.
The ceremony was also a powerful reminder that the world is watching, and justice for cultural heritage is possible. Thanks were extended to the Dutch Government, the NCMM, and especially the Oba of Benin, whose legacy these bronzes honor.
Goge Africa TV celebrates this moment — one of pride, healing, and a step closer to reclaiming our story.
